On July 30, the featured noon concert at Emmanuel Church will be a presentation of classical pieces by a group of local cellists. Members of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, entering its 34th year of performances in Bellingham, are joining Orcas Island cellist, Dale Heisinger, a 25-year member of the orchestra.

Current and past members include Chip Bergeron, principle cellist, Nick Strobel, Bette Anne Swede, Celia Obrecht, Mary Passmore, Cory Traber, and Dale Heisinger. This is the second time that they have performed at the Brown Bag Concerts.

Included in the program will be Benediction (arr. Gary Hardie), Beethoven’s Trio in C major, Opus 87 (transcribed by A.C. Prell, Mendelssohn’s Andante con moto from the “Italian” Sumphony (arr. Colin Hampton), Libera Me from Faure’s Requiem (arr. Colin Hampton), Faure’s Pavanne and Senaille’s Allegro Spiritoso (both also arr. by Colin Hampton). There will be additional pieces by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms and Antonio Vivaldi.

The concert will be followed by a bring-your-own lunch on the lawn overlooking Eastsound with friends, neighbors and the performers. These popular Brown Bag concerts have become an Orcas tradition for hearing the best of local musicians. Although the concerts are free, donations are welcome to support the Emmanuel Music Committee’s grant each summer to a young Orcas musician to attend music camp.
