A group of Lopezians are holding a Solid Waste Forum on Wednesday, Sept. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lopez Center.
The goal of the meting is to help resolve current solid waste problems in San Juan County. Concerned community members, county officials, and environmental organizations are invited to participate. Washington State Ecology and San Juan County personnel will provide input and recommendations.
“San Juan County’s waste management office maintains that Lopez Island does not produce sufficient tonnages of garbage,” said forum coordinator Dan Silkiss. “Consequently, we became a financial burden to San Juan County … some Lopez residents wish to undertake the operation of our local transfer station independently or under the county’s jurisdiction.”
