The Lopez school district has appointed Bill Evans, most recently superintendent of the White Pass School District as its interim superintendent.

Prior to his service in White Pass, Mr. Evans served for four years as superintendent of the Lopez Island District.

I am looking forward to working with the Lopez Schools, the community and the young people of Lopez Island,” said Evans. “Please feel free to drop in and visit any time after August first. My door is always open, and the coffee is on.”

The three initial applications for the position were reviewed by an interview committee representing the staff, community and school board. The committe evaluated the candidates’ qualifications and narrowed the field to two candidates, following up with reference checks.

The combination of Mr. Evans’ Lopez Island experience, his extensive service as a Washington State educator, and his focus on student success and building strong teams of educators, made him the unanimous choice of the Lopez School Board at its meeting held on July 6,” said retiring school principal Roland MacNichol.

The position is half time, as it has been for the past two years. Evans will assume the position effective Aug. 1.

I am so pleased that Bill Evans will be rejoining Lopez School and the Lopez community,” said board chair Diana Hancock. “Bill knows and cares deeply about Lopez kids. He has been a committed member of our community and has a track record of building strong relationships with staff and parents. Moreover, the board feels both his Lopez and extensive Washington State public schools experience make him the ideal person to supervise and mentor our new K-12 principal, Lisa Shelby.”

MacNichol said the Lopez school board intends to explore ways to enhance the district’s administrative effectiveness and efficiency. He said the current interim position “may be changed or combined with other administrative roles in the future.”

Evans will lead the school board’s review of the administrative structure over the course of the next school year.

Diana Hancock is currently serving as the district’s acting superintendent, assisted by MacNichol. All inquiries and school business prior to Aug. 1 can be directed to them at the district office, 468-2201, ext. 2300.
