The San Juan County Fair depends on locals to keep it going. And now more than ever, we need to help sustain this annual event where island children and adults show their livestock, compete with their horses, showcase their writing, art, and baking skills, listen to live music, and get to eat such exotic delicacies as the elephant ear.
For the first time, the fair is not receiving any additional funds from the county. Now all of its programs and year-round operations are financed by ticket sales, vendor fees, and non-fair user groups who rent the facilities during the year. And without an extra boost from the county, there may be some financial holes in this year’s budget. There are several ways to help.
• Sponsor a fair program. You can sponsor specific events, like children’s programs, educational exhibits and activities, or entertainment. You can also sponsor overall fair needs like providing hay and feed for the animals, shavings and sand for the stalls, decorations, or supplies. All levels of sponsorship are available; sponsors receive recognition at the fair, on its website, and in publicity materials.
• Let our county and elected officials know that the fair is an important community asset and that you support actions that will help to expand fairground uses, generate needed additional revenue and create a vibrant community center.
• Hold your special event at the fairgrounds. They have facilities that are affordable for rentals.
• Buy season tickets. Come to the fair often and bring your friends and family.
• Enter an exhibit and then donate your premium money back to the fair.
• Volunteer to be a Department Superintendent or to help out on set up day with decorating, displaying exhibits, or helping to monitor the exhibits during the fair.
Since 1906, the fair has been a gathering place for 4H participants, island artisans, local green thumbs, children, and their parents. It has grown into a four-day event with more than 22,000 visitors. It is one of the few occasions when we all come together as a county, except when we are united to fight legislation or ferry issues.
In the midst of county budget cuts, we can’t let the fair go by the wayside. Where else could we see baby lambs, ride the Zipper, eat curly fries, and get a sunburn?
This year’s fair is August 12 through 15. To sponsor a program, make a donation, or become involved with the festivities, call 378-4310 or visit www.sanjuancountyfair.org.
