It’s Orcas Island’s special way of welcoming the season.
Eastsound businesses will stay open later on Friday, Dec. 4 to help islanders kick-off their holiday shopping, with the first night of “Shop the Rock” weekend.
It’s also the night of the annual Tree Lighting ceremony. The Community Band will play holiday musical favorites at the bandshell in the Eastsound Village Green, beginning at 4 p.m. Local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce will provide hot apple cider and tasty cookies and treats.
At 4:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at the Village Green, courtesy of a special delivery from the Orcas Island Fire Department. They will sit at the base of the bandshell stage, handing out toys to all the good girls and boys.
At 5 p.m. the band will pause, as the giant Christmas Tree will be lit for all to enjoy.
New this year is a light parade on Saturday, Dec. 5. The parade, sponsored by the Orcas Island Car Club, will wind its way from the public school and down North Beach Road. The parade will feature cars (and anything else that moves!) with lights that will illuminate Eastsound. A $100 prize will be awarded to the entry judged to be the most creative. To sign up, contact Perry at Napa Auto (376-4901).
Saturday is also the second night of Shop the Rock weekend.
