San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

Aug. 16: An Anacortes man claims a bullet struck his homemade “fiberform” boat as he was traveling east in Haro Strait, and about a quarter-mile off the south end of San Juan Island. The 72-year reportedly first heard the sound of a shot being fired and then heard something hit the front section of the vessel’s port side.

Aug. 22: A man from Austin, Texas was rescued from the waters near San Juan Island’s 4th of July Beach after the back end of his 27-foot sailboat caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames. The 25-year-old had reportedly gone into the water to survey damage done to the boat’s hull after it it had recently aground when embers in a charcoal grill he had been using spilled out and ignited the back of the boat. The man escaped without injury.

Aug. 27: The back half of a tray assembly used to haul a motorcycle, and that had recently been detached from a motor home, disappeared from the grounds of an Orcas Island home in an apparent theft. The tray assembly, valued at $3,000, reportedly had been left in a location visible by those traveling in the 6000 block of Orcas Road at the time it disappeared.

Bystanders rescued an 85-year-old Seattle man from the water after his 17-foot boat unexpectedly lurched into gear, slammed into a neighboring boat and then capsized on top of him in a terror-filled mishap at a private dock near Roche Harbor. The man, who was preparing to go crabbing with a friend at about 8 a.m., was treated at the scene for hypothermia and later flown to a mainland hospital for further treatment.

A familiar face, a blemished driving record and a pair of warrants led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man following an early-evening traffic stop in Friday Harbor. The 48-year-old, reportedly wanted in Island County on a pair of felony charges, was pulled over on Second Street at about 6:30 p.m. and taken into custody for driving with a suspended record.

Sept. 1: Two San Juan Island teens were arrested on alcohol-related charges following a late-night traffic stop in Friday Harbor. The driver, a 17-year-old boy, was allegedly intoxicated when he and his two passengers were pulled over near the intersection of Caines and Nash streets at about 2 a.m.

Sept. 3: Complaints about loud music emanating from an Argyle Avenue apartment after 11 p.m. prompted a ticket for a San Juan Island man who ignored a deputy’s repeated advice to turn it down. The 52-year-old was reportedly warned three times before being issued an infraction for disturbing the peace.

Sept. 4: A mailbox was reportedly blown apart and burned in an apparent act of vandalism in the 200 block of San Juan Island’s Wilderness Way.

Sept. 5: The interior of a San Juan Island veterinary clinic sustained extensive damage in an apparent after-hours break-in that authorities believe may be linked to a recent string of burglaries targeting businesses in Friday Harbor. In addition to the vet clinic, located in the 800 block of Mullis Street, the burglarized businesses include the office of a nearby wireless communication provider, a restaurant and drive-thru espresso shop in the area of Nichols and Web streets, and a First Street tavern.

Evidence of an overnight campsite was reportedly found on Turtleback Mountain by a Bainbridge Island woman and fellow hikers, and then turned over to Seattle police because the group was uncertain about how to notify authorities on Orcas Island. Local authorities were later notified by their counterparts in Seattle that the confiscated equipment was in their possession.
