Buying new plants for the garden has never been so beneficial to the community.
Orcas school students are selling everything from upside-down tomatoes to double-petal Sarah Bernhardt peonies to deer-resistant double-bloom daffodils as part of a fundraising contest between now and March 12.
All items are between $10 and $30. Fifty percent of every purchase goes towards funding the Orcas Island Farm to Cafeteria (F2C) Program. The classroom that collects the most orders will be treated to a pizza party, and the individual who collects the most orders will receive a cash prize.
Elementary teacher Anne Ford McGrath and high school junior Iris Parker-Pavitt are spearheading the drive.
“This is a great chance to get a head start on your late spring through fall gardens while benefiting our growing Farm to Cafeteria Program,” said McGrath, who is also a Farm to Cafeteria Committee Member.
All orders made either face-to-face or online; they will be shipped in as little as five days. Organizers say “Flower Power Fundraising” offers only the finest, best-quality bulbs and plants available from growers in Holland and the U.S. and an unconditional, 100 percent money-back guarantee.
