The Orcas girls’ soccer team beat La Conner in overtime 3-2 on Tuesday in a last minute golden goal scored by Maddy Smith. The Lady Vikings scored first with a goal put in by Stephanie Shaw, which, said Coach Chama Anderson, “…was a beautiful floating shot to the opposite corner of the goal that went in right under the crossbar. We scored back and forth in the first half and then in the second half of the game, Grace Thompson crossed the ball to Alison O’Toole who headed it in for the second goal. Then the game went into overtime and Ashley Klein passed it to Smith, who snuck the ball past the keeper to make it 3-2, our favor.”
This victory was especially sweet for the Lady Vikings, as La Conner has dogged their heels for the last two years. This put the Orcas team tied in second place with La Conner for the league. Orcas lost to La Conner on Thursday 2-1 on the neutral field of Mt. Vernon High School.
The Orcas team, in third place now, goes to tri-district. They played Evergreen Lutheran on Monday, Nov. 3 in Tukwila. If they win, they are assured a berth in the state tournament with games to be played on Thursday and Saturday against an as yet undetermined opponent.
Coach Chama Anderson said, “As our season winds up, I just want to mention Hannah North. She’s an excellent defender that has been very consistent throughout the season and each game she has performed super well no matter what the outcome. Our team is very versatile, and they perform equally well on offense and defense. I really appreciate the hard work and perseverance of all the players.”
The Orcas girls’ soccer team plays its last home game during the play-offs on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m.
