Lopez soccer shuts down Arlington Christian

The Lopez Lobos soccer team won handily, 8-2, at Arlington Christian on an overcast early fall day at Arlington Christian School. Head coach for the Lopez soccer team, Richard Têtu, commented, “The young people played really well. Within the first several minutes of the game, Arlington Christian scored two goals, making it 2-0 in the first several minutes. Our kids had to learn quickly which players were the threats, go there, and be aggressive and efficient shutting them down.”

The Lobos soccer team did just that, adding a score before the half, bringing the count to 2-1 with Arlington Christian leading at the end of the half, but after matching the opposing team’s skills, the Lobos came back with six goals scored in a rousing second half.

Top scorers for the Lobos were Samuel Ferguson, sophomore, who scored three goals against Arlington Christian in the second half, followed by Charlie O’Neil, junior, with two goals and two assists forward, and Lyra Dalton, junior, with one goal scored in the second half. The goalies for the Lobos were Arlen Coiley, freshman, who performed admirably and stopped several oncoming passes with his quick agility, and backing Coiley up was Hans Hellman, who shared the goalie’s responsibilities throughout the game.

During the second half of the game, the Lobos broke up the passing game of the opposing team’s halfbacks and forwards, incapacitating their middle and allowing the Lobos to be more effective in their offense, which paid off well in a succession of goals by the Lopezians. Sebastian Lasbo, junior, a center halfback traded off with Jordan Haber, senior, the sweeper for the Lobos team, to effectively rid the opposing team of their offense.

The Lopez soccer team played Shoreline Christian at Shoreline Community College on Tuesday Sept. 23, and they will play again at home on Lopez against Mt. Vernon Christian on Friday, Sept. 26.
