When you can combine having a good time and raising money, it is a win-win situation. The halibut dinner hosted by the Deer Harbor Community Club in August was very successful, thanks to the generosity of several businesses and many helping hands.
The proceeds of $6400 will help reduce the mortgage on the post office building that was purchased last year. Due to federal cutbacks, the Deer Harbor post office was slated for closure along with hundreds of other rural post offices. With the promise of a 10-year lease from the federal government, the community banded together last summer to raise sufficient funds for a down payment and then obtained a mortgage.
The following businesses deserve special thanks for their donations: Pam and Craig Carpenter of the Deer Harbor Inn, Wyndham Development Company of the Resort at Deer Harbor, Richard and Nanae Fralick of the Day Dream Farm Cottage, Don and Denise Wilk of Orcas Island Eclipse Charters, and Tom Averna of Deer Harbor Charters.
We are so fortunate to live in a place where people get involved in their community and give so generously of their time, talent and resources. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this event so successful.
