I like to think that logic, historical perspective and common sense are part and parcel to my decision making. I have a decision to make about the upcoming school bond. I get to pull the lever, I get to vote. So many times in the past others decide for me.
Let’s consider some perspective. Gas prices, ferry tickets, health care insurance are all going up. I love those letters from the insurance company that say “the Legislature made a change, so your rates are going up.” Sigh. I’m told that if cap and trade moves forward at the federal level, our electric bills will double or triple. Washington State is seriously considering an income tax. Finance regulation/reform just passed in Congress. I can just see a letter coming from my bank saying “your fees are going up.” I write my representatives in the State and Fed, but they just listen to the “party” and “lobbyists.”
Did I mention that my home’s assessed value went up almost the very month the markets dove in August 2008? I heard the real estate market is not quite fluid lately. I know it’s old news, but new bills keep coming. Foreclosures are still at an all time high. I’ve heard of some on Orcas.
My business serves “Joe” public. If it gets tougher for “Joe,” it gets tougher for me. I’m a “Joe” public myself …. you get the point.
I’m told that in school construction you can’t use volunteer labor and prevailing wage is required. RCW’s limit the use of common sense cost saving options. Good thing I am constantly working to find ways to cut costs in my business and at home.
I taught at the school, subbed, attended events and volunteered. My three kids graduated from the school. I have valued the school’s place in our community. Treasured teachers influence in my kids’ lives. Stayed active in their school lives. Thing is, I feel like I’m going to be getting a letter saying, “your fees are going up.”
I am pretty sure how I will vote on the school bond, but I am watching the debate, considering viewpoints. Not going to be pressured because it’s “right thing to do.” Hope you too use some common sense in your decision making. It is not an easy decision to make. Budgets in the balance – mine, yours, school’s, great-grand-kid’s. I wonder if my State and Fed reps have trouble sleeping, thinking about how to balance their budgets. After the vote I’ll need to write a couple of letters.
Come what may, I’ll be seeing you.
