Lopez soccer team falls to Shoreline Christian and Mt. Vernon Christian

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, in an away game at Shoreline Christian, the Lobos played an intensely vigorous game against the number two ranked soccer team in the state, Shoreline Christian. The Lobos were able to hold the stronger team to 0-0 in the first half of the two 40-minute halves. Coach Richard Tetu reported, “Before the game even started, the referees told all of us that they allowed on-hands pushing in this game. They weren’t even going to yellow or red card for it unless it was over the top. Our players had to adjust quickly to this mindset and they came out fighting.”

Coach Tetu reported that his team marched down into Shoreline Christian territory, threatened their goal for a healthy chunk of time and blocked most attempts by Shoreline Christian to regain possession of the ball. But in the second half, Shoreline Christian battled through the Lobos’ sweeper and scored two goals, making the ending score 2-0.

Lobo Sebastian Lasbo played a strong game throughout, and was assisted in passing down field by Jordan Haber and Tahoma Wrubleski, both playing defensive positions.

The Lobos played again on Friday, Sept. 26, on a crisp fall day, against Mt. Vernon Christian in a home game. The Lobos lost 4-1 against the Mt. Vernon team and one Lopez player was hurt soon into the game. Early in the first half, Arlen Coiley, goalie for the Lobos, was injured in a play near the net. Hans Hellman, back up goalie, went in as replacement for Coiley, even though Hellman had suffered a muscle pull earlier.

Charlie O’Neill had spectacular stop-and-fake passes that confused the Mt. Vernon Christian players. William Carson assisted and fed O’Neill passes.

But Mt. Vernon broke up several well-orchestrated passes by the Lobos, running the ball into Lobo territory and scoring.

Sam Ferguson scored the Lobos’ solo goal. He was assisted by several other Lobos players. Both Brooke Schober and Jamie Cummins, commented Coach Tetu, “had really impressive games out there on Friday. Neither of them quit when feet were flying and they really got a taste for it. Both of them did a great job and attacked the ball.”

Tetu conceded that the team should have had more shots at goal during both games. “But,” he said, “the experience they gained in these games will help overall with their confidence and finesse in handling the ball. It was a great week for the team.”

The Lobos Soccer Team played again on Tuesday, Sept. 30 against Grace Academy after the Sounder went to Press. Their next game will be Friday October 3 at Lopez against Providence Christian at 2:00 pm.
