San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
Oct. 24: Someone stashed some type of explosive device inside a Lopez Island mailbox in an apparent act of vandalism in the 400 block of Cross Road. The 8-by-18-inch long mailbox was mostly destroyed when the explosive went off.
Oct. 25: An elderly Orcas Island man accused of punching a paramedic in the chest was taken into custody and later transported to a Bellingham hospital for a mental health evaluation following a display of aggressive behavior that took several acquaintances by surprise. The 79-year-old, acting out-of-character during an early-morning display of belligerence outside a North Beach Road business, reportedly resisted the help of a deputy and paramedic and then lunged nearly four feet in the direction of the medic in order to land a blow.
A fender-bender and a stalemate in a North Beach Road parking lot led to a late-night arrest of an Orcas Island woman for DUI. The 41-year-old was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m. after being prevented from leaving the lot by a man who claims to have first heard the woman burning rubber and speeding, and then to have seen her back her sedan into a fence.
Oct. 26: A warrant led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man who reportedly failed to appear in court on a charge of DUI. The 33-year-old was taken into custody at his Cedar Hill Road home at about 10 p.m.
Oct. 28: Two San Juan Island men were flown off-island for treatment of injuries following a late-night high speed collision near the intersection of Roche Harbor and West Valley roads. The driver, 22, and his passenger, 36, each suffered head and neck injuries in the crash. The 22-year-old, charged with negligent driving, reportedly drove through the intersection and over an embankment at about 1 a.m.
Oct. 31: A San Juan Island man accused of crashing into a fence and leaving the scene of a single-car collision was tracked down and arrested for DUI and for hit-and-run. The 25-year-old reportedly caused significant damage to both the fence and his sedan after running off the road in the 2000 block of Roche Harbor Road. He was taken into custody about two miles from the crash site at about 2 p.m.
Nov. 1: A Lopez Island boy who was expelled from school for brandishing a razor blade on a school bus, and who two weeks later showed up at the high school, was warned to stay off school grounds or face a possible arrest for trespassing. The 16-year-old, who reportedly went to the school to speak with a younger sibling, was expelled two weeks earlier for allegedly threatening another student while brandishing the blade.
A 32-inch flat-screen TV vanished from a guest room of a Rosario-area inn in an apparent case of theft. Attached to a bolted stand at the time it disappeared, the television was last seen in late October, and was a fixture in a room that hadn’t been rented since early that month. A sliding door to the room was reportedly discovered to have been unlocked.
Nov. 2: A San Juan Island man accused of leaving the scene of a late-night single car crash was tracked down and arrested for DUI, hit-and-run and driving without a license or identification. The 30-year-old was reportedly located on the deck of a nearby home and taken into custody at about 3 a.m., roughly three hours after the collision occurred. The man reportedly struck a tree near the intersection of Caution Point Drive and Sutton Road at a high-rate of speed, causing significant damage to his sedan and the tree.
Nov. 3: Friday Harbor Drug Store collected and turned over 45 pounds of prescription medications it recovered in its recent Take Back program. The stockpile of medication will be disposed of by the Sheriff’s department.
Nov. 4: A San Juan Island woman who reportedly took off in the pickup of a friend who intended to give her a ride home was tracked down and arrested for DUI. The friend of the 22-year-old reportedly had stopped at a convenience store and was inside when the woman drove off in his pickup and left the good samaritan behind. She was taken into custody at her Halvorsen Road home at about 12:30 a.m.
Accusations of assault led to the arrest of a 17-year-old San Juan Island boy on a charge of misdemeanor assault. A 16-year-old girl was reportedly involved in the case.
Failure to obey a stop sign prompted a ticket and a mid-afternoon arrest of a Lopez Island woman for driving with a suspended license. The 35-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 2:30 p.m., reportedly failed to stop at the intersection of Center and Lopez Sound roads.
A familiar face and a warrant involving an alleged misdemeanor led to the arrest of a Lopez Island man near the skate park in Lopez Village. The 20-year-old, wanted in connection with an alcohol-related offense, was on foot and reportedly walking by the skatepark shortly before he was taken into custody without incident at about 2:30 p.m.
Nov. 5: Someone used spray paint to deface various areas, equipment and buildings at Orcas Island’s Buck Park in an apparent case of vandalism. Buildings and a telephone by the ball fields, as well as areas at the skate park, were reportedly marred by graffiti.
A late-night single-car collision led to the eventual arrest of a San Juan Island woman for DUI. The 21-year-old, who left the scene along with a passenger was found inside a home several blocks from the where the crash occurred, was taken into custody at about 12:30 a.m. The woman, who suffered minor injuries, reportedly crashed into a grove of trees after losing control of her SUV near the intersection of Argyle Avenue and North Bay Lane.
An early-evening collision with a pedestrian prompted a pair of traffic tickets for a San Juan Island teen who was driving without a license. The 17-year-old reportedly struck a 57-year-old man, who suffered minor injuries, as he crossed the intersection of Second and Spring streets at about 7 p.m. The boy was ticketed for failure to yield and for driving without a license.
Nov. 7: All four sides of a van belonging to Lopez Island’s Senior Services were soiled and defaced by raw eggs in an apparent episode of vandalism. The van, parked at senior center headquarters on Fisherman Bay Road at the time, was reportedly struck by at least a dozen eggs, while two large logs used as partitions in the center’s parking lot were knocked off their stands during the incident as well.
Nov. 11: A Friday Harbor man claims a total of 40 gallons of gas were siphoned out of his pickup over three separate occasions in an apparent case of theft. The pickup was reportedly left unattended and in the same parking lot in the 600 block of Warbass Way each time an amount of fuel disappeared. Its owner, who resides on Brown Island, reportedly found the locking gas cap that he purchased after the second theft on the ground near the pickup in the wake of the latest theft.
