A San Juan Island man accused of a vicious beating which left another man with multiple fractures of his face will serve two months in jail after pleading guilty to felony assault.

On Aug. 8, Justin Allen Ruyle, 20, pleaded guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of third-degree assault, a Class C felony. He was ordered to serve two months in jail and to pay $750 in fines and fees. In addition, he was ordered to pay a total of $11,880 in restitution to three separate accounts, including $10,713 to the insurance company which covered the victim’s medical costs.

As part of the sentence, Judge John Linde determined Ruyle is ineligible to participate in the work crew program and must serve the full 60-day sentence in jail.

According to court documents, Ruyle struck the man in the face with his fists about a half-dozen times during a late-night altercation at the home of his mother’s girlfriend in January. Shortly after the altercation, Ruyle filed a report at the Sheriff’s office claiming the other man instigated the assault by shoving Ruyle and that he struck the man to avoid being the first to suffer a blow. Officers subsequently found the man in bed with a multitude of facial injuries and a blood-stained carpet and wall at the front of the house.
