The Lopez High School soccer team’s first game kicked off at the home field on a hot and sunny Thursday afternoon, Sept. 11. The opposition, La Conner, belongs to the A league, made up of schools one size larger than those in the Lobos’ B league. Historically a sizable team, La Conner’s numbers were diminished this year due to eligibility issues, fielding only nine players. Though not required, Lopez matched La Conner’s nine rather than the usual eleven.
The game started in a flurry of activity. Within the first five minutes, Lopez Junior Charlie O’Neil scored off of a beautiful cross by William Carson. The teams remained closely matched with Lopez, combating La Conner’s big and fast players with tight and controlled passing.
Sam Ferguson dropped a ball over the fingers of La Conner’s keeper. William Carson and Tahoma Wrubleski scored as well. Lopez Keepers Emmett Lawrence and David Hellman each had several saves.
The crowd was kept busy with frequent goals by both teams, resulting in an extremely high-scoring game of four Lopez and six La Conner. The team seemed satisfied with their performance in the hard-fought game.
