Joan Stamm will begin a new series of five “Ikebana” classes starting July 16 and continuing on Aug. 13 and 27 and Sept. 10 & 24.

The summer class will focus on the Heika style, which uses tall vases rather than low water basins. Students with previous experience can also practice other styles of their choosing.

Beginners are welcome, and no previous experience is necessary. The classes are held at Emmanuel’s Old Parish Hall. They begin at 2 p.m. with a short talk, demonstration and centering meditation; then students practice their own arrangement while Stamm gives individual instruction.  Tea and treats are served informally. The class finishes by 4 p.m. The cost is $15 per session, or $50 for all five sessions. Students bring their own plant/flower material, clippers and vases.  Stamm will have a few vases, clippers and extra flower/plant material on hand.

Stamm is the author of “Heaven and Earth are Flowers: Reflections on Ikebana and Buddhism,” a 2011 Nautilus Book Award winner.  She holds a Shihan (authorization to teach) from the Saga School of Ikebana located in Kyoto.
