Beach Watchers program is a ‘best-kept’ secret of the San Juans | Letter

I would like to let folks know of an inspirational program offered on Orcas Island through the Washington State University Extension Program called Beach Watchers. I graduated from the 100 hour program last year, and feel it is one of the best-kept secrets around. It features well-educated professionals of our community sharing their expertise and passion for the Salish Sea ecosystem. The classes give you intimate access to organizations throughout the San Juans doing their part to assure a healthy future for our marine environment. Cost of classes is $35-100 and 100 volunteer hours over the next two years. My volunteer hours are spent educating others, conducting interesting scientific research around Indian Island and acting as steward to this place I call home.

Please consider joining fellow islanders in a truly transformative program by becoming a WSU Beach Watcher. The program runs from March 30 – May 21. Contact the WSU office at 378-4414.

See you at the beach,

Rusty Diggs
