Eastbound at the time of the crash, the 31-year-old, who had reportedly been drinking prior to the crash, missed the curve near the intersection of Cattle Point and Golf Course roads, drove off the roadway at a high rate of speed, struck a road sign, went up an embankment and then came to a stop after colliding into a tree.

• Excessive speed and a warrant led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man following an early evening traffic stop near the intersection of Firwood Lane and Roche Harbor Road. The 36-year-old, who was pulled over shortly after 7 p.m., was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license. He was also ticketed for driving with an open container and without proof of insurance, and for speeding.

July 5: In a flashback from a year ago, three street signs and the posts they were attached to vanished from an intersection on the south end of Lopez Island in an apparent theft. • A 42-year-old Suquamish man faces charges of assault with a watercraft and reckless boating after running aground on Low Island in Wasp Passage with seven crew mates onboard, all of whom ended up in the water as a result of a high-speed crash. Two men onboard the 22-foot commercial crab boat were airlifted for treatment of broken bones and hypothermia. The 42-year-old’s blood alcohol level was reportedly twice the legal limit to drive more than an hour after the boat ran aground shortly after midnight.

July 9: A late-night clash over the day-use area of San Juan Island’s county park led to the arrest of an 18-year-old Seattle man for possession of marijuana. The man was taken into custody at about 1 a.m. after he and a friend, who were sleeping in the day-use area, refused to leave the area and return to their campsite, prompting a call to Sheriff’s department from park staff. A deputy reportedly noticed a lighter and paraphernalia in the man’s shoe as the two men were preparing to leave.

July 13: A newly purchased laser-jet printer en route to Canoe Island’s French Camp disappeared from the camp’s Orcas Island mail delivery box in an apparent theft. The printer, valued at $400, was reportedly left beside the camp’s Killebrew Lake Road drop box because it was too large to fit inside, and vanished shortly after.

July 14: A 19-year-old Orcas Island man was arrested on alcohol-related charges after a deputy reportedly saw him vomiting on the side of the road near the intersection of Orcas and Uff da Hill roads. The man, traveling with a carload of friends who had pulled over shortly before the arrest, was taken into custody at about 11 p.m.

July 15: A pair of local felony warrants prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island man, who faces an additional charge of resisting arrest following a failed attempt to elude capture. The 19-year-old, reportedly identified by an off-duty officer while parked outside an Eastsound convenience store, was taken into custody shortly before 8 p.m. following an unsuccessful attempt to dash away from the scene.

The 36-year-old, who is reportedly in the U.S. illegally, was taken into custody shortly before 8 p.m. after crashing into another vehicle on Main Street in Eastsound. The man, who reportedly fled the scene, was later taken into custody and then transferred into the custody of federal agents.

July 17: A San Juan Island man was arrested for DUI following a rear-end collision with a van at the intersection of Guard Street and Tucker Avenue. The 45-year-old reportedly plowed into the rear of the van, which was stopped at a stop sign at the time, shortly after 6 p.m. and caused significant damage to both vehicles.

July 18: A familiar face and failure to appear in court on allegations of furnishing a minor with liquor prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man in Friday Harbor. The 50-year-old was apprehended after he was seen walking in the 700 block of Mullis Street at about 7:30 p.m.
