The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls:
July 27
• A deputy responded to report of vandalism in Friday Harbor. An investigation was completed, the suspect was contacted and a report was written.
• A deputy was dispatched to a report of several vehicles that had been prowled in Friday Harbor. Two of the vehicles were missing items from inside. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
• A deputy responded to a report of a dog barking incessantly in Eastsound. The dog owner was contacted and given a warning for violating the county noise ordinance.
• A Lopez Island deputy was called to a reported theft at the Lopez Historical Museum. Possible suspects were described to the deputy, who searched the village without success. A report was taken.
• Deputies responded to a private health care facility in Friday Harbor for an unwanted person. When deputies arrived, the person had already left.
• A Lopez Island deputy responded to a residence on Shark Reef Road for a welfare check after the resident, who the reporting person believed was ill, did not answer the telephone when the deputy called. It was determined that no one at the residence was in distress. A report was completed.
• A San Juan Island resident discovered that his credit card was being used after he was in a local business in Friday Harbor. Within a short time after using his credit card, he discovered that approximately $3,000 had been charged on Internet purchases. The victim’s bank reversed the charges and is investigating.
• A female subject was told by a property owner to leave their property. She refused and had to be told repeatedly to go.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically. The driver left the scene of a collision after causing damage and was arrested a short time later for DUI, hit-and-run which caused property damage and attempted assault with a deadly weapon.
• A Lopez deputy issued a motorist a ticket for speeding on Fisherman Bay Road.
• An Orcas deputy responded to the Olga area in regard to a hit-and-run. No other vehicles were damaged, just property. Evidence was found on scene and collected. The driver said he swerved to avoid a deer and he was not injured. A report was taken.
July 28
• San Juan deputies were dispatched to a Friday Harbor business for a trespassing complaint. The business owner decided he no longer wanted the customer on his property and he requested the customer be issued a trespassing letter.
• There was a reported assault at the Orcas Island Library. When deputies arrived, neither party wished to pursue the matter.
• A found bicycle was reported on Orcas Island. It was collected and booked into property at the Orcas Substation.
• A man reported being robbed of cash by a person who gave him a ride to the Orcas ferry landing. The investigation continues.
• Orcas deputies were dispatched to an argument involving road rage. The parties were separated and interviewed, and negligent driving charges are being considered. The investigation continues.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a Mud Bay Road residence to investigate a reported theft. The homeowner claimed a sum of cash, which she left in her unlocked house, was missing. She believed someone must have entered her home without permission and taken the money.
• Deputies investigated a damaged mailbox on the west side of San Juan Island. The mailbox is valued at $400.
July 29
• A deputy was dispatched to a single vehicle non-injury collision in Friday Harbor. A collision report was taken.
• Deputies responded to the report of a possible residential burglary that had happened on Kanaka Bay Road. They found that the report was unsubstantiated.
• Lopez deputies were dispatched to a reported assault on a private beach. Upon investigation, it was discovered to be an argument regarding clamming access to private tidelands. No charges were filed.
• Deputies responded to a harassment call on Orcas Island. After talking with both parties, it was determined there were no criminal actions, and both parties came to an agreement.
• Deputies received a report of an argument at Jackson Beach on San Juan Island. They were told an intoxicated person had been seen driving towards town in a small white SUV. The SUV was located at the Big Store and the driver was arrested and processed for DUI. The vehicle was impounded.
• A San Juan deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle speeding 73 mph in the posted 45 mph zone on Roche Harbor Road. The driver was issued a traffic infraction for speeding.
• A deputy pulled over a vehicle for no tail lights on at night. The driver was cited for driving with a suspended license. The vehicle was towed.
July 30
• Deputies were dispatched to an Eastsound address regarding a domestic assault. After interviewing all parties, probable cause was determined and the primary aggressor was arrested and taken to jail.
• A deputy initiated a traffic stop in Friday Harbor and the driver was issued an infraction for speed and warned for not having proof of insurance.
• A Lopez Island woman called deputies after finding a dog wandering on her property. The dog owner came and got the dog before the deputy arrived.
• A deputy initiated a traffic stop in Friday Harbor and the driver was issued an infraction for cell phone use while driving and warned for having expired registration and no current proof of insurance.
• A concerned Lopez Island resident called deputies regarding people swimming in Hummel Lake. A deputy checked and all in or on the lake were wearing lifejackets and appeared to be very well supervised by adults.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a collision with injuries on West Valley Road. Subsequent investigation revealed that a crime had been committed and the driver was arrested for vehicular assault.
July 31
• A kayaker off the west side of Lopez Island found a submerged backpack containing a handgun. The bag and contents were turned over to a Lopez deputy. An investigation is being performed to determine who the owner of the gun is and why it was in the water.
• An Orcas deputy initiated a traffic stop on a driver who was going 43 mph in posted 25 mph zone on Mount Baker Road. The driver had been previously warned for speeding on Mount Baker Road and was issued a traffic infraction.
• Orcas deputies responded to a bike accident that turned out to be caused by a car making a left turn. There was no contact, but the bicyclist went over the handlebars trying to stop. The driver was cited for failure to yield and the bicyclist was transported to the emergency room by the aid unit.
August 1
• A Lopez Island woman reported a dog has been coming onto her property repeatedly. She held the dog until a deputy arrived. The dog was returned to its home. The dog owner was cited for allowing the dog to run at large.
• A Lopez Island deputy was sent to put down a deer hit by a car along Center Road. No injured deer was located in the area.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a problem with an employee at a business. The deputy assisted the persons to resolve the issue.
August 2
• A San Juan deputy initiated a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle on Cattle Point Road. The driver was issued a traffic infraction for going 65 mph in the posted 45 mph zone.
• A Lopez Island deputy responded to assist a motorist whose motorhome had broken down, partially blocking the intersection of Fisherman Bay and Cross roads. A tow truck was called and removed the motorhome, clearing the hazard.
• A San Juan deputy initiated a traffic stop on Roche Harbor Road. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license in the first degree.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to an Eastsound address regarding a burglary that had occurred. Evidence was collected and a report was taken.
• An Eastsound citizen reported found property by her home. The item was recovered by deputies for safekeeping.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a possible violation of a protection order. The responding deputy observed that there was insufficient evidence to establish probable cause to make an arrest.
• A deputy responded to the Lopez Village for an indecent exposure complaint. The suspect stated he urinated in a business’ parking lot after he was unable to get to a bathroom. He denied intentionally exposing himself. The witness confirmed he did not expose himself.
