Celebrate “Spring Americana” with the Orcas Island Community Band, Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center.
In its 26th year, the Community Band will present a program of tunes mostly by American composers and arrangers.
While there will be a diversion to merry old England with Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite for Military Band in F major” and a visit to France with Georges Bizet’s
“Farandole from L’Arlesienne Suite No.2,” the remainder of the selections have a definitive American theme.
Co-conductors Jim Shaffer-Bauck and Karen Key Speck are excited for audiences to hear current pop smash hits “Shut Up and Dance” and “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2” as well as the original “Star Trek” theme as this is Trek’s 50th anniversary year.
Other popular selections performed on Saturday will be “God of Our Fathers” (the National Hymn), Leroy Anderson’s ever-popular “The Typewriter” and a Dixieland inspired song called “Sugar Blues” featuring a tuba solo by Beth Jenson.
To liven up the evening even more, door prizes are provided by Orcas/ACE Hardware. Admission is by donation.
