The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
May 18
• A deputy stopped a vehicle in the area of Marguerite Place in Friday Harbor because the driver was not wearing her safety belt. The driver was issued a traffic infraction for failing to wear safety belt.
• A deputy was dispatched to a civil disagreement on San Juan Island. The reporting party was advised to get a restraining order if he would like the sheriff’s office to intervene.
• Deputies received call from an Eastsound resident that a violation of a court order occurred. After completing an initial investigation a report will be completed.
• Deputies and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a vessel in distress on the south end of Lopez. Upon arrival it was determined the vessel had taken on too much water to be rendered safe. Vessel assist towed the vessel and the U.S. Coast Guard transported the occupants to a safe location.
• Deputies were dispatched to an Eastsound residence in reference to a theft. Deputies conducted a preliminary investigation and will be following up with additional information.
• At 2:27 p.m. a deputy in Friday Harbor received a request to assist a citizen with an offensive email message he received. The deputy talked to the citizen and documented the complaint.
• In the afternoon, the sheriff’s office contacted parties at the sheriff’s station in Friday Harbor in reference to an alleged assault that had occurred approximately 30 minutes prior. The case was closed after the investigation.
• While investigating a minor vehicle collision in the parking lot of the Peace Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor, a deputy arrested the driver of the at fault vehicle for driving under the influence of drugs.
• On San Juan Island, a citizen reported that his sister was missing.
• At about 8 p.m. deputies investigated an illegal dumping on Roche Harbor Road at Hillview Terrace. The sheriff requests that anyone who might have witnessed this to call the sheriff’s office.
• A Lopez Island deputy was sent to investigate a noise complaint. A car stereo was playing loudly from a vehicle parked near Lopez Village. The vehicle departed before the deputy arrived. No further action was taken.
May 19
• A San Juan Island deputy processed a failure to redeem a vehicle from impound. The registered owner of the vehicle was issued a traffic infraction.
• A victim came to the sheriff’s office in Friday Harbor to report damage to the hood of his vehicle. There were no suspects at the time of the incident.
• A deputy was dispatched to a welfare check of a lost child in Friday Harbor. The child was reunited with the parents.
• A deputy responded to Price Street in Friday Harbor in reference to an abandoned vehicle. A vehicle was ticketed for parking in excess of 72 hours and was tagged for impound.
• A Friday Harbor resident reported what they felt was an illegal dumping in a town trash bin. The suspect was located. He had dumped a five gallon bucket of recycling into a Town of Friday Harbor bin. He was advised to take his recycling to the county dump in the future.
• A Lopez deputy was dispatched for a single vehicle collision on Mud Bay Road. An investigation showed the driver ran off the road due to a combination of speed and alcohol consumption. The driver was arrested and cited for driving under the influence.
May 20
• In the afternoon, a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on Spring Street in Friday Harbor for failing to wear safety belt. The driver had been previously warned for the same violation on April of this year. The driver was issued a traffic infraction.
• A three-year-old child was found walking on a street on Orcas. A check of the neighborhood located the distraught father, who thought his daughter was sleeping in the house. The child was re-united with the father.
• In the afternoon a deputy responded to a two vehicle collision in the area of Mullis Street in Friday Harbor. The driver at fault was issued a traffic infraction of operate a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on Guard Street in Friday Harbor for failing to wear safety belt. A driver was issued a traffic infraction for failure to wear safety belt and no valid operator’s license with identification.
• A Lopez deputy was called to mediate a civil dispute between landlord and tenant. Both were referred to state landlord tenant laws.
• A Orcas deputy gave a female a courtesy ride to an Eastsound location. The deputy had prior knowledge the female had alcohol restrictions. The female had an odor of intoxicants. She refused to provide a sample of her breath, which violated her probation restriction.
May 21
• A deputy attempted a traffic stop on Orcas Island. The driver fled the vehicle, but the deputy was able to identify the driver. The vehicle was impounded. The driver was later contacted and issued citations for obstructing a law enforcement officer and failure to obey a police officer.
• Lopez deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover collision on Mud Bay Road. Driver and passenger were uninjured and the investigation showed the collision was caused by wet road conditions.
May 23
• Friday Harbor deputies responded to a domestic dispute in town. The parties were contacted and it was determined to be an over-medication issue. The person was taken to the emergency room for evaluation and treatment.
• On Lopez a traffic stop was made and a warning was given for speed, defective brake lights, no registration and no current insurance card.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a hit and run in the 300 block of Argyle Avenue. The victim reported that someone backed into his parked vehicle. The deputy obtained video of the incident. This case is still under investigation.
• A San Juan Island citizen complained about OPALCO vehicles doing work on their lines.
• A Lopez deputy was dispatched for a hit and run collision which occurred months prior. There is no suspect information at this time.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a hit and run to a parked vehicle that had been parked on Blair Avenue by the middle school. Currently there are no suspects.
• A deputy was dispatched to the San Juan Island area in reference to a dog bite. The reporting deputy arrived and contacted the dog owner. Information was taken and the owner was advised to quarantine his dog. The victim was contacted. There is no enforcement action at this time.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a dog that was found at large by the reporting party. The deputy observed that the older female black lab did not have any tags or anything that would have indicated who the owner was. The dog was taken to the animal shelter.
• At 8:27 p.m. a Friday Harbor resident was found in the bushes after driving his scooter off the roadway in the area of 8500 Roche Harbor Road. The driver of the scooter was found to be driving under the influence and was arrested.
May 24
• At 10:10 a.m., a deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a hit and run. It was reported that an unknown vehicle hit the victim’s vehicle in the parking lot and did not leave a note. Currently there are no suspects.
• A deputy initiated a traffic stop in Friday Harbor on a driver who was issued infractions for seat belt fail to wear and no proof of insurance.
• A deputy was dispatched to an unwanted person in Friday Harbor. The individual had left before deputies arrival.
