“Music Education for Young Ones” workshop led by UW professor

Dr. Patricia Campbell, professor at the University of Washington School of Music, is coming to Orcas Island as a guest of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.

She will spend a week in local preschools and give a community-wide open workshop on providing music education to young ones ages birth through seven brings.

Campbell will work with the students and teachers of our island’s preschools during the week of April 13 to 16. Her lifelong focus on early childhood learning and musical development in diverse cultures provides a rich context for our island educators and parents. She will be visiting Children’s House, Kaleidoscope, Salmonberry, and Montessori schools during the week presenting music resource materials and methods.

The culminating session of the week is an interactive In-Service Workshop for all island educators, parents or guardians, and interested community members. Campbell will talk about the importance and timeliness of introducing music to young ones and demonstrate methodology using age appropriate songs and chants, recordings, instruments, and music vocabulary.

The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parish Hall, Emmanuel Church in Eastsound. Registration is required. No Tuition for islanders; $30 for off-island participants. Coffee and conversation begins at 9:30 a.m. with the session starting promptly at 10 a.m.. Bring brown bag lunch.
