Treasure time: Senior Center’s annual Granny’s Attic sale has furniture, linens, dishes, instruments, and everything in between

It’s like having a dozen garage sales all squeezed into one big day.

Donations from the community for the Orcas Senior Center’s major fundraiser Granny’s Attic were down – but in the past two weeks there was a surge. And treasure hunters will reap the benefits.

“There is something for everyone,” said Jane Heisinger, coordinator for the Orcas Island Senior Center Advisory Committee. “It’s truly amazing.”

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, Orcas Islanders will line up outside the senior center’s front doors to check out the goodies that fill two rooms and the lobby. This year there is a variety of furniture, including an oak coffee table, a head board, nightstands, chairs, and an entertainment unit. Other notable items are a 12-string acoustic guitar, a full set of Dansk dishes, three sets of golf clubs, a 100-year-old Persian rug, linens, Easter decorations, a Picasso Edition plate, Nikon, Olympus, and Canon cameras, and lots of books.

Donated china tea cups and plates have been set aside for the center’s free tea luncheon every third Wednesday of the month.

Shoppers are asked to bring their own bags if possible. At 2 p.m., all furniture and higher end items will be marked half off and you can fill a grocery bag with anything from the main room for $5.

Heisinger says hundreds of islanders come to the sale, and it brings in between $6,000 and $8,000 for the senior center.

Any books that don’t sell are given to the library for its annual sale and other items are donated to the Exchange. If something of particular value is not sold, it will be posted on eBay.

Heisinger says a corps of around five volunteers have been organizing and cleaning the goods for Granny’s Attic.

“For the volunteers, the fun is seeing what comes in and what people don’t want,” she said. “And on the day of the event, it’s the fun of seeing what people buy. It’s like this big giant treasure hunt.”
