‘Orcas Has Talent’ to replace ‘Orcas Idol’

One of the most popular community shows of the year just got a makeover.

“Orcas Has Talent” will replace “Orcas Idol” in February 2011. The new format brings a variety show back to center stage.

The show remains the major fund raising event for the Orcas Island Prevention Partnership – a community coalition of concerned individuals and 13 organizations, groups and agencies that focus on prevention work here on Orcas.

Singers, musicians, dancers, comedians, jugglers and other kinds of talented contestants, from high schoolers to adults, are invited to try out at the audition show on Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m. at the Grange. Three judges will award the top 10 acts their “Golden Ticket,” which is pass to compete for the grand prize at the Orcas Center stage finale show Feb. 5, starting at 6:30 p.m. The grand prize is $200.

Orcas Has Talent, Jr. will also replace the former Idol Junior competition. Open to youth in grades five to eight, it will be held Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Grange. Encouraging judges select the top junior talent and the winner will perform at the finale show. New this coming year, if they choose, the junior winner can also go up against the 10 finalists for the overall winner.

There are new attractions at the finale show this year, including a preshow “light dinner” from 5 to 6 p.m. Arrive early, enjoy some delicious foods and receive a “first call” for general admission seating with the purchase of a meal. Munchies will also be for sale during intermission. There will also be an “Entertainment Raffle” on sale starting Jan. 1. Prizes for movies, shows, music and more will be offered.

Shows at the Grange: Jan. 22, tickets sold at the door, Orcas Has Talent Junior, 2-4 p.m., $5, door open at 1:30 p.m. and Orcas Has Talent audition, 7:30 p.m., $10, doors open at 7 p.m.

Orcas Has Talent at the Orcas Center, Feb. 5, 6:30 p.m. Patrons of the Arts – (formerly “Idolizer”) advance tickets, with reserved seating of your choice and “front of the line” service (no waiting) will be on sale Dec. 8 through Jan. 21, $50/adult and $35 youth (ages 12 and under).
