A Richard Lawson dump truck was traveling down Olga Road when the driver lost control. The truck rolled on its side, slid down the road towards the water and crashed into the garage of a house. The vehicle was carrying asphalt.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

The homeowner, Coleen O’Brien, is cheerful despite the accident.

“I’ve been thinking that a truck full of marshmallows in my garage would have worked out better than a truck full of tar,” she laughed. “However, it sounds like the driver will be fine and no one here was hurt, so we’ll look at cleaning up and rebuilding as just another form of exercise.”

Olga Post Office employee Oshean Schiweck was in the lobby of the building when he saw a truck careening down the road at a high rate of speed. He ran to the south window in time to see the drivers’ side wheels lift off the pavement and the truck barrel into the garage, landing sideways. He called 911, locked up the post office and ran outside to help. Schiweck said the roof was smashed in, the windshield was shattered and the driver was on the floorboard of the passenger side.

“The engine was still going, and I kept trying to talk to the driver but I got no response,” Schiweck said. “I could hear her saying, ‘I gotta get out of this truck.’ I asked her a number of times to turn off the engine and she eventually reached over and turned it off.”

He then climbed onto the truck and began pulling off house debris. Schiweck said he advised the driver to stay inside the vehicle until help arrived, but she climbed over the dashboard, out the broken windshield and slid down to the ground, where she was able to walk around.

Sean Haugen, who drives the route for Olga Post Office, grabbed an extinguisher to put out a minor fire that had originated in the brakes.

Schiweck said his help really “wasn’t a big deal.”

“I saw the situation and something had to be done,” Schiweck said.
