San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
Dec. 21: Two Seattle-area men claim someone sneaked into their guest room at a Lopez Island resort and stole several hundred dollars of cash while they were asleep. The men, ages 31 and 30, and who together reportedly lost $400-$500, believe the thief entered their room through an unlocked sliding-glass door.
Dec. 25: A familiar face and a warrant led to the late-night arrest of Orcas Island man wanted in connection with a local felony offense. The 25-year-old, who reportedly was seen standing on a sidewalk in Eastsound Village by a deputy familiar with the case, was taken into custody shortly before midnight.
Dec. 26: Two San Juan Island men were ticketed for unlawful hunting after prowling across private property near Beaverton Valley and Salt Spring roads without permission. The men, a 17-year-old and another who’s identity was unlisted in the incident report, were also issued a warning about trespassing.
Dec. 28: An Orcas Island man suffered a broken arm and a broken leg, and a head injury, in a late-night rollover collision in the 2000 block of Crow Valley Road. The 36-year-old, who reportedly lost control of his SUV as he swerved to miss a deer, suffered possible internal injuries as well. Trapped inside the battered vehicle for several hours, the man was extricated from the wreckage about at midnight and then flown off-island for treatment.
Dec. 29: A 100-pound female goat suffered fatal injuries following an apparent dog attack on Lopez Island’s Fawn Lily Lane. The goat, found outside the pen in which it typically was confined, reportedly had injuries and bite marks consistent with those of a dog.
Excessive speed led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI. The 42-year-old was westbound near the intersection of Dolphin Bay Road and McNallie Lane when he was pulled over shortly after 8 p.m.
A San Juan Island man accused of running over a pair of mailboxes and leaving the scene was tracked down and later arrested for hit-and-run. The 48-year-old, who reportedly knocked down the mailboxes after stopping to ask for help at a home on Island Drive, was taken into custody in part because of damage to his vehicle.
Dec. 30: An undetermined quantity of beer disappeared from Islanders Resort’s dockside market following an apparent break-in and theft. As much as $200 of beer reportedly may have vanished in the break-in.
Dec. 31: A tip from a passerby led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man on alcohol-related charges shortly before the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. The 57-year-old, who reportedly was passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle, with the engine running, was taken into custody in the 100 block of Spruce Street at about 11:45 p.m. and charged with being in physical control of a vehicle while intoxicated.
A single-car collision led to the early-evening arrest of an Orcas Island woman for DUI. The 49-year-old was taken into custody in 500 block of Swan Road at about 6:20 p.m.
A defective taillight led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI following a traffic stop shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve. The 23-year-old was pulled over in the 300 block of Crescent Beach Drive at about 11:45 p.m.
Jan. 1: A Friday Harbor man, pulled over shortly after the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, was arrested for DUI. The 35-year-old was taken into custody on Guard Street at about 1:45 a.m.
Jan. 2: A familiar face and a blemished driving record prompted a late-night arrest of an Orcas Island for driving with a suspended license. The 29-year-old was pulled over in the 1300 block of Mount Baker Road at about 11 p.m.
Forty 3-foot-long copper rods disappeared from outside a San Juan Island home in an apparent theft. The rods were intended as part of a patio, which, at the time, was under construction on Walling Road.
Jan. 3: Two Lopez Island men face charges of theft for allegedly shoplifting $13 worth of merchandise from Lopez Village Market. The men, ages 21 and 18, reportedly tried to leave the market without paying for a carton of lemonade, a bag of chocolate bugles and a bag of chicken tenders from the deli.
Jan. 4: A Friday Harbor man who sent off $2,000 in order to claim a prize from a Jamaican sweepstakes may have fallen victim to an apparent scam. The 57-year-old, notified over the telephone that he’d won a large sum of cash and a Mercedes, was reportedly told to send the $2,000 as a processing fee, but has yet to see the supposed prize.
A defective taillight led to a traffic stop and two tickets for a Friday Harbor man who was pulled over at about 5:50 p.m. near the intersection of Argyle Avenue and Dougherty Lane. The 35-year-old, ticketed for driving without a license and without insurance, received a warning about the defective rear-light.
