Orcas Rotary’s second annual pickleball tournament, held at Buck Park on Saturday, Aug. 18, continued a friendly rivalry between Orcas and San Juan Island pickleball advocates.
Three local community groups will receive $1000 each: Orcas Center’s subsidized ticket program, Orcas Food Co-op’s farm fund (fresh produce for those in need) and the Orcas Community Resource Center.
The tournament held 76 matches with 30 participants, including four players from Friday Harbor and two from Honolulu, Hawaii. Tournament co-chairs Linda Hamilton and Kathy Kantrud awarded prizes to the winners: men’s division – Greg Stafford and Paul Pollard, overcoming last year’s San Juan Island winners; mixed division – Suzanne Olson and Daniel Marty; women’s division – Eirena Birkenfeld and Roxy Marck.
Sponsors for the event were Islanders Bank, Island Market, Island Petroleum Service, Rainshadow Solar, Frank Fagan (San Juan Island), Linda Hamilton, The Kantrud Family, Ralph Kaplan, Bob and Jeanne McPherson and Ray’s Pharmacy. For the raffle, Kathy Wehle donated two pickleball paddles, and Jennifer Corban donated a silver-plated bracelet.
Gary Ivans of Orcas Food Trucks made pulled pork sandwiches for the festivities. Adia Dolan provided homemade goodies to help raise funds for her upcoming leadership program, “Global Gap Year Program—Thinking Beyond Borders.”
“We thank Orcas Parks and Recreation for their assistance and the beautiful area for our games,” Hamilton said. “And special thanks go to the Orcas Rotary and Orcas Pickleball groups for helping with tents, coolers and ice, chairs, moral support, and most important: participation!”
