In the closest golf match of the season, the Orcas Vikings boys’ and girls’ teams pulled out wins at the league match held at the Similk Golf course in Anacortes on Monday, April 14.

On the strength of a sub par round of 34 by Anthony Ghazel, and a season’s best of 37 by Henri Bredouw, the Viking boys scored 202 over LaConner with 204 and Friday Harbor with 205. “It was a very good day,” said coach Bobby Olmsted. “As a team, they all knew they could not only play with these other teams, but beat them.”

The girls’ team also played well with a strong showing by Cetacea Stanton who scored a season low of 54. Maddy Smith also shot a round of 54, securing a place at the district tournament. Melissa Moran-Hodge led the girls’ team, carding a 52.

On Thursday, April 17 Orcas faced previously unbeaten Highland Christian at the Snohomish Golf Course and scored an impressive 209-234 victory. Bredouw and Taylor Diepenbrock led the team with low scores of 37 and 39 respectively.

The girls were led by Moran-Hodge with a low score of 44, followed closely by a round of 53 by Smith. “Snohomish is a hard course, especially for girls,” said Moran-Hodge. “It was nice to do well there.”

“The hard work is also starting to payoff for both teams,” said Olmsted. “We still need to refine our course management and club selection, but we are on the right course to do well at districts and State.”

The Vikings play cross-pond rival Lopez on Wednesday, April 23. Their final home match on Monday, April 28 is an all-league tournament and the final match before the league and District championships.
