Orcas Fire rolls out new ambulance, resumes in-person training

A new ambulance is on the frontlines of Orcas Island Fire and Rescue’s emergency response fleet. Originally slated to roll out early this year, getting the ambulance outfitted and ready for service was delayed due to COVID-19.

After battling issues with aging vehicles, repeated mechanical failures and increasingly costly repairs, the agency was in desperate need of a new and reliable ambulance. OIFR began the process of purchasing a new ambulance in late 2018 with identifying the need, outlining a budget, completing the bidding process, and designing the apparatus to fit the needs of future patients who would inevitably be transported in their greatest time of need.

“We are happy to provide the community with a new ambulance which will serve our residents and visitors for many years to come,” shared Orcas Fire Chief Scott Williams.

In addition to seeing a new ambulance responding to calls, the community may notice an increased presence of in-person firefighter and emergency medical personnel conducting training throughout the island.

“When social-distancing measures went into effect to combat COVID-19, OIFR personnel took to the internet to complete ongoing training through video conferencing and online platforms,” Williams continued, ”as San Juan County moves through the phases of reopening, personnel will begin to meet in small groups to conduct essential training, while continuing training online when appropriate.”

Traditionally, Fire, Rescue and EMS members routinely participate in ongoing education and drills – allowing them to keep proficient in vital skills which support their ability to deliver quality emergency services to the community.

Orcas Island Fire and Rescue is proud to be serving our neighbors and would like to thank you for your continued support.
