The Orcas Island Food Bank invites the entire island community to a dessert-and-hot-drinks open house on Sunday, July 10 to celebrate the opening of its new building.
“Though each step of the journey to have our own food bank building has taken longer than anticipated, we are excited to finally see the end in sight,” said food bank co-director Joyce Shaw. “Although there will still be more to finish after the open house, we are ready to show the Orcas community the building that they have funded. We hope that everyone will come and celebrate with us.”
The celebration will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 10 in the Orcas Island Community Church basement, with a presentation by co-director Larry Shaw at 2:30 p.m. The new building will be open for tours. Coffee, tea and dessert will be served.
“The food bank board wants to thank the generous donors, supportive businesses, island organizations, and all the volunteers that have worked so hard to make the new building a reality,” said secretary Yvonne Ashenhurst.
Ashenhurst listed as “major supporters:” Island Market, Orcas Island Community Church, and the Orcas Island Community Foundation; Rose’s Bakery, Morningstar Farm, Maple Rock Farm, La Campasina Project and Troller Point Fisheries have donated food regularly; the Orcas Garden Club, the Episcopal parish and others have purchased CSAs for donation; the Orcas Island Realtors Association and the Master Gardeners promoted Plant a Row for the Hungry; the senior center, Ray’s Pharmacy, Key Bank and the Post Offices have hosted donation boxes for food; and countless others have lent a hand as well.
