Baseball and golf earn league titles; fall sports now in effect

The Vikings baseball season is over, and the boys celebrated as 1B League Champions.

The Vikings faced the La Conner Braves on March 26. Orcas brought their bats, leading them to an impressive 20-6 win, on the road.

Saturday, March 27, brought the last home game of the season for Orcas where they competed against the Friday Harbor Wolverines. The Vikings fought and battled but were unable to hang on, in game one, as Friday Harbor took the victory in a 4-11 game. The second game also ended in the Wolverines’ favor with a score of 2-10.

The following week, the Vikings were on the road in their final games of the 2021 season. March 31 consisted of a trip to Coupeville, where Orcas faced off against Darrington on an equal turf. The Vikings were able to hold the Loggers to no runs all game, leading them to a 3-0 victory. On Friday, April 2, Orcas baseball traveled to Mount Vernon Christian, finishing the season as the 1B champions.

Orcas softball traveled to La Conner on Friday, March 26 to take on the Braves, in their last away game of the season. The Lady Vikings’ bats were on fire as they battled through the afternoon. This included a three-run home run by senior, Portia White, sending herself, Lindsey Simpson, and Flora Lister home with a shot over the left field fence. The team took the energy and defeated the Braves 19-2.

The following day, March 27, Orcas took on Friday Harbor, in a double-header, to end their season. Game one started off strong for the Lady Vikings, but the Wolverines were able to slowly gain the runs back. By the end of the 7th inning, the game was tied, 11-11. The game was sent into a tie-breaker, with the last out of the previous inning being placed on second base. Friday Harbor scored two more runs and the Vikings were unable to come back, resulting in a 11-13 loss for the Vikings. Game two ended in Orcas’ favor with a final score of 7-3.

The Viking golf team completed their last week of the 2021 season, last week with two trips to Friday Harbor. One taking place on March 29 and a tournament on April 2, to finish out the short season. Orcas girls golf won the league championship. This year, there will be no postseason for any sports, meaning no district or state tournaments.

Fall sports

The traditional fall sports season has begun at Orcas Island High School. Volleyball, soccer and cross country all started practicing last week in preparation for the start of games this week.

The Lady Vikings Volleyball team will be on the road April 8, at La Conner, for their first match of the season and will be back home on April 10 to face off against Concrete.

Orcas Soccer will head to Mount Vernon Cristian on April 7 and will be back home, on April 10, to compete against Providence in their first home game of the season.
