In September’s Writer’s Roundtable, the group will get out their literary umbrellas and sunscreen and talk about how to elegantly incorporate external elements of setting, like weather, into their pieces.

The session is from to 1 to 3 p.m. at the Orcas Library on Saturday, Sept. 11.

“We’ll look at readings from Jackie Kay’s ‘Trumpet’ and E. Annie Proulx’s ‘The Shipping News,’ among others, to examine how to skillfully use your setting for the most compelling impact and keep it free of cliche,” said organizer JoEllen Moldoff.

Jennifer Brennock will lead the session, which includes prompted exercises and peer feedback. Writers of all skill levels and genres are welcome.

Brennock is the assistant director of Artsmith, an Orcas nonprofit supporting writers and visual artists, and the emcee of the Artsmith Salon Series. She earned an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She has edited poetry, critical commentary, creative nonfiction, and fiction for a literary journal. Her memoir piece “Spilling” was recently published in the Pitkin Review. She teaches creative writing and writes in all genres. “Writing while learning how to write is like patting your head and rubbing your stomach,” she said. “You just gotta keep doing it until it feels natural.”
