San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
Nov. 14: A total of $17,000 in cash disappeared from its hiding place at a San Juan Island home in an apparent case of theft. The stash of cash was reportedly last seen in its hiding place a month before it was discovered missing from the Reef Net Road home.
Nov. 26: A 33-year-old San Juan Island man, who reportedly was pummeled repeatedly on the back with a tire iron, was flown off-island for treatment following an alleged assault at a home on Scheffer Drive. A 52-year-old man who lives at the home is identified as a suspect in the alleged late-afternoon attack.
Nov. 27: An Orcas Island woman claims she was attacked, hit in the face and threatened with a knife by her estranged husband during an alleged assault at her North Beach home. The 48-year-old man, reportedly a convicted sex offender with criminal records locally and in Oregon, reportedly showed up unannounced at the woman’s home early in the morning, forced his way inside and then fled after the alleged attacked.
• A 19-year-old San Juan Island woman was arrested for an alleged alcohol-related driving offense after she was found unconscious and behind the wheel of a car that crash through a National Park Service fence at American Camp. Paramedics reportedly had to break a window to reach the woman, who was flown off-island for treatment, because her car was locked and its windows were rolled up.
Nov. 29: A San Juan Island man claims someone siphoned 28 gallons of gas out of his backhoe in an apparent case of theft. The backhoe reportedly was parked near the front of the 61-year-old’s Egg Lake Road home at the time of the theft.
Dec. 1: An episode of profanity-laced outbursts and intimidating behavior prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man for disorderly conduct. The 40-year-old, reportedly screaming obscenities in front of a Friday Harbor toy store and who then stepped in front of a moving vehicle and yelled at the elderly woman behind the wheel, was taken into custody at about 1:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Spring Street.
Dec. 3: Sixty feet of white picket fence collapsed after someone reportedly barreled through a 20-foot section in an apparent case of hit-and-run at a San Juan Island cemetery. Skids marks were reportedly found on the road leading to the fence at the Madden Lane cemetery.
Dec. 3: Twenty-five simulated cellphones – valued at $1,250 – disappeared following an apparent after-hours break-in at a San Juan Island wireless communications store. It’s the second time in three months that the company’s Mullis Street building has been broken into.
Dec. 6: An Orcas Island woman suffered a broken leg after colliding with a tree near the intersection of Mount Baker and Gibson roads. The 33-year-old reportedly lost control of her vehicle and went off the road at about 5:30 p.m.
• Two car prowlers were caught on tape while looking for vehicles to plunder – and finding one – in the parking lot of an Orcas Island inn. The pair reportedly snatched the faceplate of a car stereo out of an unlocked pickup that was parked beside the office of an Eastsound inn during the alleged theft.
• Though damaged, a cash register proved impenetrable during an attempted after-hours theft that apparently failed at an Orcas Island restaurant. The thief, or thieves, reportedly entered the restaurant via an unlocked door on the side of the building, located on Prune Alley in Eastsound, but were unable to break into the cash register. A stockpile of beer and a change jar, which reportedly were in plain view, were left untouched.
• An estimated $3,450 in medications, jewelry and assorted household items vanished from an Orcas Island home in an apparent mid-afternoon burglary and theft near the north end of North Beach Road. Someone reportedly broke into the home, located on Hunt Road, and made off with the goods sometime between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Dec. 7: A San Juan Island man closed a debit card account after it was used overseas to purchase $484 of merchandise in an apparent case of fraud. Six different transactions took place in Madrid over a four-day period before a credit card company notified the 59-year-old about suspicious activity involving his account.
Dec. 8: An Orcas Island woman was initially stunned, but ultimately reimbursed, after numbers of her debit card were used to pay for an overseas rental car in an apparent case of fraud. The 66-year-old, notified by her bank of the suspicious transaction, was reimbursed for the $694 rental-car payment, which occurred in London.
Dec. 9: A warrant issued in Oregon led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man wanted in connection with an alleged felony in the neighboring state. The 22-year-old was taken into custody at about 11 p.m. in Eastsound following a chance encounter with a deputy in the 500 block of Rose Street.
Dec. 10: A request for extra patrols came from Skagit Valley College’s San Juan Center after someone tried without success to siphon gas out of a state-owned van for the second time in less than a month. The 16-person van sustained $400 in damage when someone reportedly used a hacksaw in a failed attempt to open up the filler-tube of the van’s fuel tank. The van had been repaired when the thief, or thieves, failed a second time.
Dec. 13: A San Juan Island woman was able to drive from a deadly late-afternoon collision with a deer on Cattle Point Road as her vehicle sustained moderate damage. The 57-year-old was southbound and near the Mullis Street intersection at about 3 p.m. when the deer reportedly jumped in front of her sedan.
