Duplicate Bridge Every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Longhouse in Eastsound is duplicate bridge. For details call 376-2797 or 376-8278.

Chess The meeting time for the Orcas Chess Club at Eastsound Library is 3:30 p.m. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome.

Al-Anon The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Al-Anon is for friends and family of alcoholics.

Open Mic The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black hosts the event. Everyone is welcome.

Theosophical Library Indralaya’s Theosophical Library is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The theosophical discussion group also meets at Indralaya from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For info call 376-4526 or email indralaya@indralaya.com.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starts between 7 and 8 p.m.

Blood pressure check-up There is a free blood pressure check-up between 10 a.m. and noon at the Orcas Island Medical Clinic. No appointment is needed.

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort. A $2 admission charge helps pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Valentine’s Day dance A portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services. Potluck is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the dance is from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the Odd Fellows Hall; $10 adults, $5 kids, but no one will be turned away.

Valentine’s Day dinner to benefit APS Christina’s Restaurant, will donate 25 percent of the proceeds from the 5 and 5:30 p.m. seatings to Orcas Animal Protection Society. A prix fixe dinner – five courses with a glass of champagne for $75 is offered. For reservations call 376-4904.

Olga potluck dinner The Olga Community Club’s February potluck dinner is in the Olga Energetic Club. Social time is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6:30, followed by the program at 7:30 p.m. Bill Buchan will be talking about “Weather Influences Affecting the Pacific Northwest.” As always, everyone is welcome.

Jazz concert Lorraine Feather and Shelly Berg will present an evening of high energy jazz tunes and clever lyrics starting at 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. “Hotel for Dogs” movie showing The only island showing of “Hotel for Dogs” at 2 p.m. at the Sea View Theatre will benefit Orcas Animal Protection. Tickets, available at the Sea View Video Store, are $5 for children 12 and under and $15 for all others.

Celebrating Lincoln The San Juan County Republican Party is celebrating the 200th Birthday of Abraham Lincoln. The evening includes guest speakers and a special dinner at the American Legion Hall starting at 6 p.m.

Salsa Dance Party There will be a Salsa Dance Party at Odd Fellows Hall to extend the Valentine’s Day mood. At 7 p.m. there will be a salsa lesson and at 7:30 it’s time to dance! Enjoy delicious cupcakes, water and juices. $20 for couples and $10 for singles.

Library sale The Friends of Orcas Island Public Library will have its Winter Book Sale in the high school cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All funds raised from the sale will go towards funding library activities.

Eat-Read-Talk 2009: A Celebration of African-American Literature All are invited to three evenings of food and conversation to discuss the work of three great American writers: Edward P. Jones (“The Known World’), Ernest Gaines (“A Lesson Before Dying”), and Zora Neale Hurston (“Their Eyes Were Watching God”). Barbara Lewis and Michele Griskey will lead the class, which will meet at Emmanuel Church on the last Tuesday of each month from February through April from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be a potluck dinner each month. The first dinner is on them. The fee for all three classes is $35. Register at the Orcas Island Library. It is sponsored by the Orcas Island Writers Festival. Home on the Grange series To kick off the series this year, Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen will play at 7:30 p.m. at the Lopez Grange. Admission for the concert is $10.

Classical music concert The Islands Sinfonia and Ginni Keith will present the first of a series of benefit concerts for the DVSAS Lopez Family Options Program. The program will feature works by Handel, Mozart, Bach, and Williams. It will be held at the Lopez Island Community Center at 3 p.m. A $15 donation is requested.
