The American Legion Post 93 of Orcas Island concluded their 32nd Annual Salmon Derby this past weekend with 70 participants. Dan Hanson won the $1,100 1st prize at 18 lbs. 1 oz.

The American Legion Post 93 of Orcas Island concluded their 32nd Annual Salmon Derby this past weekend with 70 participants. The proceeds from this event go to supporting programs sponsored by the American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion for Veterans and their families in need, high school scholarships, boys state and children of the island in need of shoes, just to name a few. On Saturday night, 47 door prizes were handed out for those entered in the Derby. They were all donated by merchants in the community. Cash prizes were given on Sunday night and the winners were: Dan Hanson won the $1,100 1st prize at 18 lbs. 1 oz; Andrew Stephens won the $500 2nd place prize at 16 lbs. 0 oz; Howard Finke won the $400 3rd place prize at 14 lbs. 12 oz; Eric Hanson won the $250 4th place prize at 12 lbs 15 oz; Greg Moses and Jim Manthly each won a $50 5th place prize at 12 lbs 6 oz; Lee Wiscomb won a $150 6th place prize at 5 lbs. 10 oz (blind draw weight); David Hall won a $150 7th place prize at 12 lbs. 1 oz. (blind draw weight). There were 22 fish caught during the derby. Last year only 11 fish were caught, despite a similar number of fishers.
