Submitted by Jamey Moriarty, Orcas Center.
Witches and warlocks, paladins and goblins, elves and humans rejoice! Your time has come to take the stage! This coming Winter, the Orcas Center will be producing “She Kills Monsters” by Qui Nguyen. It will be directed by Jamie Moriarty.
This play is a cultural phenomenon that premiered in 2011 at The Flea Theater in New York City and then swept through high schools, colleges, and community theaters across the country, eventually landing on the shores of Orcas Island. It is an action-packed Dungeons & Dragons adventure (yes, there are fight scenes) that follows a young woman’s quest to learn more about her dead sister and ultimately herself. It is a comedic, heartfelt story of sisterhood, friendship, identity, and grief that unfolds with each roll of the dice.
A pre-audition open call script readthrough will be on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. Auditions are Nov. 6 and 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. To sign up for a 15-minute audition slot: email jamey@orcascenter.org. Callbacks are Nov. 9 from 6-9 p.m. The first cast read-through is TBD but will be sometime in November/December. Stage rehearsals begin on January 7, 2024. Performance dates are 7 shows between February 29 and March 9, 2024 on Orcas Center’s Center Stage.
The cast is made up of 16 characters played by 11-15 actors (list of characters at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Kills_Monsters) ranging in age (14 and up), gender, and ethnicity. Depending on who auditions, casting may include some doubling of parts and/or gender-fluid casting.
To audition, email Jamey with a proposed 15-minute time slot on either of the audition dates. Walk-in auditions will be welcome, but those who have sent an email will receive priority. Auditions will take place in groups and individually in front of a small handful of people from the production team.
We look forward to your audition, and are excited to hear you sing and see you play! Emphasis for this production will be on having fun together as a team in a low-stress but hard-working environment.
Here’s to a great adventure!
PS: Astute actors will notice that we are auditioning “She Kills Monsters” and “Into The Woods” on the same evenings! Well done, you are correct! This is for efficiency. You are welcome to audition for both shows, but you may only be in one or the other, as your sanity is important to us!
