The Orcas Island Viking Volleyball team concluded its season ranked 9th in the state tournament. The Vikings had a solid season with an 18-6 record and were undefeated at home.
On Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the state tournament, the Vikings played Odessa 0-3: 16-25, 20-25, 20-25, followed by a 3-0 win against DeSales: 25-20, 25-17, 25-15. On Thursday, Nov. 9, they concluded their time at state with a breathlessly close game against Liberty Christian, which went to 5 sets.
After being tied 1-1, the Vikings won the next set with a skillful hit by sophomore starter, Sofia Mahony-Jauregui. The following two sets were very close with Liberty Christian winning both.
“That game was so fun, we played really well together as a team and all of our hard work and training showed!” said Mahony-Jauregui. “Our coach [Mallory Balcomb] told us to be proud and that was the best we ever looked playing as a team.”
