Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby returns for a day of family fun in Moran State Park

The much-anticipated Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby and free pancake breakfast is back for its annual event, scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 28 at Cascade Lake.

The event this year has been moved from its normal Saturday to Sunday because of the Orcas Island School District using Saturday, April 27 as a “snow make up day.”

The highlight of the event is the fishing derby itself, where young anglers will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and reel in some impressive catches. Starting at daybreak, participants will gather at the Cascade Day Use Shelter for a free pancake breakfast to fuel up for a morning of fishing fun.

At 11 a.m., the excitement will peak as participants bring their catches to the weigh-in station. Prizes will be awarded for various categories, including biggest fish, best sportsmanship, and more.

“We’re thrilled to bring back the pancake breakfast and the Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby for another year,” said organizer Fiona Stone. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for children and families to connect with nature, learn new skills, and create lasting memories together. We invite all young anglers in the community to join us for a day of fishing, fun, and camaraderie.”

In addition to the fishing derby, the event will feature the Jeffrey Pyne Free Fishing Weekend where free fishing poles will be given away to children who need them (while supplies last). Registration for the Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby is free and open to children aged 13 and under. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, although a limited number of loaner rods and reels will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
