After splitting against St. Georges and Mabton last week, Orcas Island High School soccer returned to the pitch this past week and completed a two-game sweep with a 6-0 win against Cedar Park Christian Lynwood on Friday, Sept. 20 and a 16-1 win against the Summit Atlas School of West Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 21.

OIHS vs. Cedar Park Christian

Friday’s match against Cedar Park saw six different goal scorers. Kevin Ibarra Garcia scored a Remy Lago goal, followed by Anthony Canejo’s score off a Ibarra Garcia ball. Max Dickey Volmer added to the offense with a goal from an Amaru Shanks-Morales assist, followed by a Junior Canejo goal from Ibarra Garcia. Hayes Richardson rounded out the scoring with a goal off an assist from Dickey Volmer.

Head Coach Terry Turner was thrilled with the performance from his keeper, Tim Malo.

“Tim Malo played an outstanding game as a goalkeeper, retaining the shutout and stopping a penalty kick,” said Turner, who also recognized the play of his back line. “Sophomore Kevin Perez had a great performance at defense in his first-ever match for Orcas High School, led by team Captain Demetrio Salinas Cruz. The enter defense played very well.”

OIHS vs. Summit Atlas

Keeping things rolling, the Vikings would pile on 16 goals against Summit Atlas the following day in the match on the grounds of West Seattle’s Cleveland High School.

Junior Canejo led the Vikings with four goals, and Joaquin Shanks-Morales and Anthony Canejo each had two goals. Ibarra, Amaru Shanks-Morales, Volmer, Vaccarella, Kristian Freeman and Andrew Kaskperski all tallied a goal apiece.

“After last year’s difficulty through the state qualifying rounds against Summit Atlas, we went into this game thinking it would be one of the bigger challenges we would face this year. However, when we got there, our team was overly prepared, and we decided to go all out on the pitch, and we left everything out there, leading to our amazing score line of 16-1,” Freeman, a senior.

Up next

The Vikings will have a tough test this Friday, Sept. 27 against Mount Vernon on the road. Kickoff for that match is at 4 p.m.

“Looking ahead specifically to the upcoming game against MVC, we know they are a tough team this year. We also have an excellent team, and we have proven in all our matches, even in the loss against St. George’s, that we can control possession and enforce our style in the game,” Turner said. “We have a deep bench and will undoubtedly create numerous good scoring opportunities. If we can finish the chances we create, eliminate mistakes, and stay firm on Defense, we’re confident we can get a positive result on Friday.”
