Over the past two decades, Didier Gincig organized an annual youth talent show called the Whale of a Show. This became a tradition which enabled generations of children to shine on the Orcas Center stage, and encouraged a great many to continue developing their talents in music, dance, and theatre. It provided an inclusive, nurturing chance for children to share their song, their piano piece, their dance, their magic tricks, with not just family and friends, but with the whole Orcas community. It gave them the chance to experience pride, and to feel appreciated for their courage, effort, and talent.

Many of the friends and neighbors we have seen performing on the Orcas Center stage participated in Whale of a Show as they were growing up. Some now even have children and grandchildren who have done the same.

This year, Orcas Center has replaced Didier’s traditional Whale of a Show with its own production called Kids Got Talent. For this reason, I feel that it is only fair to recognize and acknowledge the previous, long standing, dedicated contribution Didier Gincig made in fostering an ongoing love of the performing arts for Orcas children.

As the MC, Didier’s delightful sense of humor and silly patter brought a sense of fun and acceptance for everyone, and helped all of the young performers feel welcome and respected.

My thanks go to Emily Gincig as well. Beginning as a teenager, Emily was a great help in making sure that everything went well on-stage and behind-the-scenes, in her role as her father’s solidly dependable assistant. I’m sure this helped prepare Emily for her former job as an Executive Director of the Funhouse.
