For the past 120 years, the Deer Harbor Schoolhouse has served Orcas Island from yesterday’s school memories to 2024’s chamber music concerts, potlucks, yoga and community meetings. At the close of its first century, roots have undermined the foundation, and the north wall has begun to buckle. The old gal is full of memories as well as potential but needs some repair before she is lost.
Deer Harbor Community Club has entered the 2024 GiveOrcas Holiday Campaign to raise $15,000 toward the estimated $40,000 repair. Please join other islanders in saving this historic and cultural treasure. Donate online through the Orcas Island Community Foundation.
The historic building is charming, and it continues to serve as a social, cultural and educational community center. However, with its auxiliary power, heat and kitchen it is also a critical emergency preparedness facility for the west end of our island when Deer Harbor Road is impassable. After Dec. 3, contributions may be made at www.dhcc.us.
