The Orcas golf team won both of its matches the week of April 13 to 17, playing and beating Rainier Christian 211-262 in nine holes and playing and winning against La Conner in an away game at the Similk course, where Orcas also beat La Conner, 219-234.
During the Rainier Christian game on Orcas Island, Taylor Diepenbrock took the medal for the day by shooting a low score of 40. Henry Bredouw and Alan Coe both shot 41’s, while Spencer Sayer came in with a 43, and Joe Boucher shot a 46. For the women’s group, Cetacea Stanton shot a 53 against Rainier Christian.
Brandon Hampton shot a 59 and Miles McClosky shot a 58.
“This is the first time we’ve played Rainier Christian,” Coach Bobby Olmsted said. “I know the coach and we had a good, comfortable game. The kids were great. They were out there to work on their game and have fun.”
Orcas played again on Thursday, April 16 at the Similk fairways against La Conner.
“It’s a great little course, nicely challenging, with some canals that run through the course as well as some blind shots through the trees,” Olmsted said. “There’s some spots that are elevated and tricky on the eye. All the kids say it’s easy and fun to play.”
Henry Bredouw was the medalist on Thursday against La Conner, shooting a 39, while Coe shot a 40, Diepenbrock shot a 41, Sayer came in with 48, and Hampton shot a 53.
“The scores are starting to come down,” Omsted said. “I expect them to fall now that it’s warming up and spring is here. We’ll stress drills even more now that the weather is helping. The day before every match, they chip and putt for two hours. Chipping and putting is the most important part of your game.”
Orcas plays again in an away game on Thursday, April 23 at Lopez Island against the Lopez golf team and the St. Paul’s golf team.
