The Lopez Lobos soccer team won 3-0 against Grace Academy on Tuesday Oct. 21, assuring their position in the district level playoffs this November.

Coach Richard Tetu said, “The score really doesn’t reflect the way the team handled the ball. We had 28 shots on goal, and Grace only had four. Unfortunately however, one of our key starters, William Carson, broke his arm in the first five minutes of the game and then Sam Ferguson took a nasty kick to his leg. A few players as well had respiratory issues that hampered their ability to play. But everyone was controlling the ball well despite the variety of injuries. Neither team is usually rough, but the winner of this match was going to go to district, so it was a little more intense for all of us. Overall, it was a great match and my kids maintained excellent control of the ball.”

Sam Ferguson scored early on in the first half of the game from a well-placed kick served up by Jamie Cummins, then Charlie O’Neil scored from the right wing later in the first half. Sebastian Lasbo, usually a defensive mid-fielder, was moved up to the front line to replace Ruthie DeGraff, and scored the final and third goal for the Lobos. “Matthew Haber,” said Coach Tetu, “distinguished himself by playing like a Tasmanian devil. The young man was everywhere at once on the field; really, his speed was impressive. And Nate Drahn is really good at watching and reading the offensive plays; he shut down one of their top offensive players. Both of them are solid defensive weapons.”

The Lobos face North Sound Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 28, and Mt. Vernon Christian on Thursday Oct. 30. Saturday, Nov. 1 will be played against a team TBD.
