The Lopez Lobos football team ran riot over the Mansfield Kernels Friday night in Mansfield, Wash., winning handily by 48 to 24 on a balmy fall evening.
Coach Berg said, “I was heartened to see the team come together and learn from their past mistakes. Last week there were too many fumbles, too many errors. This week they forced fumbles on the other team, and even took advantage of one of them. Shaun Samuel did a great job, scoring on a 40-yard fumble recovery. Great focus all around, offensively and defensively.”
The numbers prove him right. In the first quarter, after the Lobos offensive line marched down the field, Tommy Kramer, freshman, scored a three-yard touchdown run and was followed up by Tucker Hoffman driving in for the two-point conversion reception for a score was 8 – 0. Then Colton Jardine, junior and quarterback for the Lobos, ran 24 yards for another touchdown and Kevin Dengler, senior, followed up once more with the two-point conversion catch. In the second quarter, Kramer had a monster 63-yard run that ended in another touchdown and Jardine put the finishing touches on that drive with another two-point conversion.
Still in the second quarter, Kramer again had another great 39-yard catch from Jardine, which resulted in yet another scoring drive. Jardine again ran in the two-pointer.
In the third quarter, Samuel scored again on a 40-yard fumble recovery from the Kernels, while Keldon Jardine, sophomore, finished it off, running the ball into the end zone for another two points.
In the fourth quarter, Kramer led the offense down the field again and ran the ball in for another touchdown while Keldon made another two-point conversion.
In rushing, the Lobos had 26 carries for 246 yards, resulting in four touchdowns and completing four out of four two-point conversion attempts.
The quarterback was 7 for 11 with 100 yards of passing resulting in 1 touchdown, and the other touchdown was scored other over a fumble recovery for a total of 6 touchdowns for the Lopez Lobos.
Errors were fewer and far between that night; only 1 fumble hurt the Lobos, coming at the end of the game. Lopez, on the other hand, profited nicely off of four fumbles by the Mansfield Kernels, 1 of which resulted in a touchdown for the Lobos.
On defense, Kramer, Samuel, and Dengler had 8 tackles each, Tucker Hoffman, junior, had 7 tackles and Leland Knopsen, junior, 6 tackles and 3 sacks. Samuel and Dengler each had 2 fumble recoveries.
Total offensive yardage for the Lobos was 346 yards and 5 touchdowns and the last touchdown was a recovered fumble from the opposing team. The fighting Lopez Lobos play again on home turf this coming Saturday, Sept. 27 at noon at the Lopez School.
