It looks like frisky but well mannered dogs will soon have a new location where they can run, romp, and play.

The Port of Orcas has donated land for an off-leash dog park in the space just adjacent to the day park at its western boundary near the corner of Mt. Baker Road and North Beach Road.

The space is planned to be a little larger than the current dog park, just south of the Hope Lane turn-off from Mt. Baker Road, near the Animal Protection Shelter.

Fundraising efforts, that began last fall by Pawki’s Pet Store and other friends of an off-leash dog park, will provide for new fencing for the area. Ezra Richardson has volunteered his labor to build the fence.

It is hoped that a small shelter to post information and protect dogs and their owners from rain or sun can be built at the site.

Robin Freeman, a dog park organizer, approached the Port earlier this winter about using the area. It’s likely the area will be available for “quite a while,” Jeff Hanson, another of the organizers of the dog park, said. But the Port will have the priority use of the land.

“It’s a good place to move to,” Hanson said, “It’s more visible and so creates more interest and use and support.”

Organizers hope to move to the new area in July.
