On Sept. 30 at Grace Academy, the Lobos soccer team played a controlled game against Grace Academy, winning 3-0. “Throughout the game,” said Coach Tetu, “Our players dominated in Grace’s territory. We had 18 shots on goal and Grace only had one shot on our goal. I was very pleased at how quickly we covered the other players and took advantage of their errors. This allowed players to make more accurate passes and out-dribble the opponent. They played very authoritatively.”
The Lobos, though, were plagued by injuries from the get-go; Nate Drahn was hurt in the first three seconds of the first half, and several other players were sick or injured as well. The Lobos soccer team played again Oct. 3 against Providence Christian in a home game. Charlie O’Neil hammered the ball past the opponent’s goalie for Lopez, making it 1-0 in the first half. In the second half, Providence quickly scored twice.
Coach Tetu commented, “Emmett Lawrence got hurt early on, and this set us back a bit, as Lawrence and Tahoma Wrubleski have a rapport on the field that our players can capitalize on. This gave other team members the chance to step in and emulate their style, but that’s not cemented yet. There’s always so much to learn.”
But Lopez adapted to the change of line up presented by Providence and in the second half, Charlie O’Neil scored a goal, making it 3-2. The Lobos were building momentum, causing Providence to dump the ball over and over again as they sought to break up the confidence the Lobos were again displaying, but then there was a penalty kick against Lopez and Providence made good on that score. The final score was 4-2. The Lobos play again on Oct. 7 against La Conner in an away game at 3:30 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. against Arlington Christian at Lopez.
