Islanders are reminded that, as graduation approaches, contributions to a scholarship in honor of Gitte Sofaer should be made soon.
On Jan. 10, 2006, Gitte Sofaer’s automobile slid into Cascade Lake, taking with it one of Orcas Island’s most well-loved citizens.
Gitte, a nurse by training, worked with islanders in a humanitarian role, on the staff of Domestic Violence/ Sexual Assault Services. She also was deeply involved with the youth of the community.
An adult Latin student for many years, she often attended the Orcas Island High School Latin class’ student presentations at the end of each quarter. And in 2005, she accompanied the high school Latin students on a 12-day trip to Italy, having taken part in the pre-trip fund raising events, as well as other fund raisers on behalf of the school. “Her zest for life was infectious not only for the students, but for all those around her,” said her Latin instructor, Francie Kisko.
To commemorate Gitte’s active role in the community and, in particular, with its youth, the scholarship fund has been set up in her memory at Islander’s Bank. The scholarship will be awarded in June 2008 to an Orcas Island High School senior who has shown community involvement throughout his/her high school years, who shares Gitte’s interests, and who embodies the energetic spirit that was Gitte Sofaer, said Kisko.
Those wishing to make donations may submit their checks directly to Islander’s Bank, made out to the Gitte Sofaer Memorial Scholarship Fund.
