San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
Aug. 27: An Orcas Island woman was arrested for DUI following a late-night single-car collision in the 500 block of Orcas Road. The 42-year-old, who reportedly drifted into a ditch and then hit an embankment, and whose SUV came to a stop on its side, escaped the collision without serious injury. She was taken into custody at the scene shortly after 2 a.m.
Aug. 28: A man and a woman from Whidbey Island were arrested on alcohol-related charges while traveling on a ferry bound for Friday Harbor. Taken into custody at about 2 p.m., the 23-year-old man was charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, while his 19-year-old female companion was arrested for underage drinking.
Aug. 29: Allegations of assault led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man accused of striking an ex-girlfriend during an altercation at her home the day before. The 25-year-old was taken into custody without incident at his home at about 5:30 p.m., after being questioned by deputies about the alleged altercation.
Aug. 30: A California woman accused of carrying two grams of marijuana across the international border was apprehended at Roche Harbor Resort marina by U.S. Customs officers, and then turned over to local authorities for prosecution. The 53-year-old Bakersfield resident, boating with a group of friends at the time, faces two misdemeanor charges, possession of pot and of paraphernalia.
Sept. 1: Two San Juan Island girls are the prime suspects of an apparent break-in and theft of a home in the Shadows Lane neighborhood. The day after the burglary occurred, the homeowner reportedly spotted one of the girls, a 12-year-old, walking on Kiel Road with a camcorder in hand that vanished along with a thumb drive, a piggy bank and an assortment of small household belongings. Charges are pending.
• A warrant led to the mid-afternoon arrest of a Lopez Island man at his Robin Lane home. The 21-year-old was taken into custody without incident at about 1:30 p.m.
• The rear window of a Lopez Island Senior Center van was shattered in an apparent episode of devil-may-care driving. Tire marks suggest that a driver was spinning wheels in the center’s gravel parking lot and may have kicked up a rock that busted the window.
Sept. 2: Five school busses were spattered with raw eggs in an apparent act of late night vandalism on Orcas Island. The egg tossers targeted the windshield of each bus, which were parked on the south side of the school at the time.
Sept. 3: A Lopez Island teen was arrested for misdemeanor theft after allegedly snatching a sandwich from the deli of a Friday Harbor grocery store. The 17-year-old boy, who reportedly left the store without paying for the sandwich, was taken into custody shortly after 1 p.m.
Sept. 4: The whereabouts of a San Juan Island man accused of knocking a 60-year-old stranger unconscious with a blow to the back of the man’s head remain unknown. According to witnesses, the 22-year-old man entered the bar of a Friday Harbor restaurant through a back door, clobbered the 60-year-old, a British Columbia resident, in the back of the head and then dashed out the back door. The Canadian man, who was flown off-island with severe injuries, was reportedly targeted by the 22-year-old in a case of mistaken identity.
Sept. 5: Someone used black spray paint – and possibly a ladder – to deface the backboard of a basketball hoop on Orcas Island in apparent case of vandalism. Taggers would have needed a boost to reach the backboard, located at the end of a cul-de-sac on Orion Lane, because of its height.
• A Clinton, Wash., woman was bitten by a buddy’s German shepherd while camping on San Juan Island with a group of friends. The 39-year-old reportedly needed 11 stitches to close the wound.
Sept. 8: A warrant led to the mid-afternoon arrest of an Orcas Island man who was apprehended following a failed attempt to escape two officers in pursuit. The 30-year-old, taken into custody in Eastsound at about 1:30 p.m., was also charged with resisting arrest. Initially spotted walking in the parking lot of an Eastsound hardware store, the man reportedly climbed into the driver’s side of a nearby van, dashed out the passenger’s side and tried without success to run away.
