Vikings win big at homecoming

Working on a short field, Viking quarterback Daniel Briggs hit Devon Stanzione for a 5 yard TD reception. Defensive back Jack Gates, in his first game, intercepted another Warrior pass, allowing Briggs a few plays later to hit Rylan Date on a beautiful 35-yard TD reception, advancing the score 14-0 in the first quarter. After a Jack Russillo 45-yard field goal, slippery Stanzione diced his way 25 yards for the Vikings third TD of the quarter, pushing the lead to 24-0.

Homecoming for the Vikings football team went well with a 73-0 win over the Chief Leschi Warriors at Dahl Field on Oct. 6.

The Warriors’ first pass attempt in their first possession resulted in a defensive back Dimitri Pence interception, which set the tone for the remainder of the game.

The Vikings lost no momentum starting the second quarter with a break-out 45-yard TD run by big fullback Jake Zier. After a quarterback sack by Zier and a change of possession, Briggs executed a perfect fake hand off to the fullback who was met by a host of Warriors and dodged his way to the end zone, bringing the score to 38-0. Interceptions by Briggs and freshman Pasha Bullock lead to two Pence running TDs, ending the half 52-0.

Linebacker Joey Susol opened the third quarter recovering a Warrior fumble and on the Vikings first series Zier plowed 38 yards to another TD, resulting in a 59-0 third quarter lead. By mid-third quarter, Pence took the helm with Trent Johns as fullback and freshman Mackey Cardinell taking center from starter Jay Zier. On a 15 yard run bouncing off Warriors, Johns scored his first touchdown of the season in the fourth quarter as did Spencer Crow on defense with a “pick 6.”

After the game, Coach Scott Harris said his goal was to start this game strong from the first play and for his players to treat this game like the beginning of a new season.
