Since starting their journey in Olympia, Wash., Matthew White and Skye Marchesi have witnessed breathtaking sunsets, porpoise sightings and even a few raccoons acting like “miniature bears” on James Island.
“We had to hang our food,” said White about the aggressive rodents. “But they still wanted to get into everything.”
But of all the scenery and wildlife they have experienced, White said the most amazing part of the trip has been to see the funds generated for Camp Orkila.
The adventurous duo has already raised $20,000 toward their goal of $100,000 for the YMCA camp on Orcas Island – what White refers to as the true treasure of the Pacific Northwest.
White and Marchesi are fundraising as they journey along the Inside Passage in “TRIAK” vessels, which are trimaran sailing kayaks. They will be traveling 1,300 miles until they reach Glacier Bay, Ala.
“It’s a great time to be in the San Juan Islands,” said White before pushing his boat out into the water.
